New Logo Winner Announced!

December 22, 2009 — jamieumbc

2,550 of you voted, and it would seem that most of the campus shares in my good taste, as demonstrated by the 60% majority garnered by the winning mascot:

While I applaud the selection, I am a bit disappointed to read that I won’t be able to purchase fan gear with the new logo until next fall. I had read somewhere that one of the objectives in holding the vote in December was to get a consensus before the bookstore placed its January order. I assumed that meant I’d be seeing New Grit on the racks by February or perhaps March at the latest.

Maybe the folks who are in charge of these things can rush some stuff into production to take advantage of the excitement. I’ve got a neighbor who could download New Grit and have a tee-shirt, hoodie (or almost anything else) ready in a couple of days. Why the delay?

A New Logo For UMBC

November 30, 2009 — jamieumbc

It looks as if someone decided that UMBC’s current logo wasn’t cool enough:

So, in an attempt to modernize our look, these three logo suggestions are now being offered:

I don’t know about you, but the dogs in options 2 & 3 look rabid to me – the kind of dog you see being led away by an animal control officer on the evening news. All that’s missing is the white foam around the mouth. They also seem sort of Scrappy Doo cartoonish. So, I guess if I had to make the call, I’d go with the determined yet still dignified look of the Retriever in option 1. That dog looks serious, like he’s about his business, but at the same time he’s not a danger to society.  I can live with that.

Of course, now much of my UMBC fan gear will need replacing (is that part of the plan?).

Voting ends on December 6.
